Jay Smith is a gifted preacher and a seasoned pastor. Faithfully preaching and teaching God’s Word, casting a vision for the church, leading in evangelism, apologetics and visitation while being a shepherd to all.

Jay graduated from the US Naval Academy and served as a Naval Flight Officer for 5 years. He proceeded into corporate life, but his inspirational conversion experience after a Billy Graham Crusade changed his life, and put him on a path he never expected. Recognizing and following His call, Jay and his family left corporate America for Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, in Fort Worth, Texas, where he graduated in May 1993.

Jay preaches with an emphasis on context and interpretation to keep the church Word-centered at all times and finds nothing more exciting than to see lives changed by His Word. For more than ten years he has led small, as well as large, churches in fulfilling their purpose to:

• Worship our Lord (John 4:24)

• Teach and preach God’s Word (Acts 5:42)

  

  Hands Sharing the Bible

• Seek to win the lost to Christ, locally and afar (Matthew 18.11)

• Serve and edify believers (1 Thessalonians 5:11), and

• Administer the ordinances of the New Testament (1 Corinthians 11:26)

Jay served as Senior Pastor of First Baptist Church of Virginia Beach before moving to Wilson, NC in 2006. While employed with The Salvation Army he felt the Lord calling him to return to the field of active ministry.

Jay and Helen, his wife of 34 years, have four children and three grandchildren.

Cambridge Baptist Church is honored to have Pastor Jay providing guidance, preaching the Word, creating new programs to meet our mission, and setting an outstanding example of servant leadership for the community.
