“Remembering What Jesus Said”
Dear Church:   This past Easter Sunday my message was titled “Remembering” and specifically we looked at “Who Remembered What Jesus Said.”  Despite three separate occasions that we have recorded in the Bible where Jesus told the disciples He was going to be arrested, crucified, and raised back to life the third day, the disciples didn’t believe Him.  But the disciples’ feeble faith shouldn’t surprise us because, if we’re honest, we see the same thing in ourselves.  Don’t we?  The difference is that we have fewer excuses than the disciples when it comes to remembering the words of Jesus.  We have the recorded Word whereas the disciples only had their memory.

I’m sure that if the disciples had their IPods, Blackberries, and laptops with them on that Saturday as they huddled in the room together in Bethany, someone would have reviewed his notes and come across the times when Jesus spoke to them of his death, burial, and resurrection.  “Guys, look!  Here it is!  When we were with Jesus in Jericho and He asked us who the people said that He was.  Peter said “You are the Christ of God.” Jesus made us swear we wouldn’t tell anyone. Remember?  Then He said, ‘The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.” (Luke 9:21) Being reminded of Jesus’ words on Saturday may have meant a night of joyful anticipation instead of despair.

What about today?  Jesus’ words are recorded in the Holy Bible so we have the Truth in print.  We shouldn’t have the kind of memory problem the disciples had and yet, how many churches today are doing what Jesus told us to do?  Jesus was very specific in what He called us to do.  In the final discourse which Jesus had before ascending to the Father, He commanded us to “go and make disciples of all nations…” That was not a suggestion.  If a church follows Jesus’ command, it means that disciple making will be the #1 priority of the church.

Church growth expert Charles Arn says, “The longer a congregation exists, the more concerned it tends to become with self-preservation – and the less concerned with its original purpose.”¹   He says that making disciples begins when church members bring their unsaved friends and family members to church.  We each know someone who is not saved, (or at least we should).  Are you praying for that person?

Here’s a very practical suggestion.  A church in California has encouraged its members to write the name of unsaved friends or relatives on an index card and carry that card with them.  They are to pray for that person(s) at one o’clock, for one minute, once a day.  That’s not too difficult is it?  Why not start today?

Then invite them to an event happening in our church especially if they have children or teenagers.  Once they make friends (parents and kids), they’ll come back.  Relationships are the glue that keeps people active in a church and holds them there.

DEACON’S BENEVOLENT PROGRAM
Cambridge Baptist Deacons Fund Raiser
Do you like to eat? If a true Baptist, the answer is a resounding Yes and Amen to that!
If so please join us at Rudino’s Pizza and Grinders on Sunday, May 1st right after church services.
Cambridge Baptist Deacons have joined with Rudino’s Pizza and Grinders to host a 4th Sunday of the Month, fund raiser for the deacons. These funds raised will go toward a Benevolent Account from which the deacons can disperse funds as needed to those in need. The account will be managed by the Stewardship Committee but the Deacons will provide the decision when to activate the funds.

For those wondering what a “grinder” is, no, it’s not something to grind metal with. A grinder in the basic sense is a sub sandwich. Also Rudino’s has salads for those health conscious of us as well as a vegetarian menu. To top it off, pastas as well, so something for everyone’s taste and wants.

So make a note on your calendar and plan to join us for lunch on Sunday the 1st .  Rudino’s is conveniently located on Ridgefield Parkway. From Cambridge Road turn right onto Ridgefield and turn left at the next turn lane.  As you turn in, Rudino’s is ahead on your left in the strip mall section. We look forward to seeing each of you there.

Men’s Fraternity
Well we’ve done it, we’ve finished The Quest for Authentic Manhood.  But  God isn’t done with us yet.  God doesn’t adopt us as sons, fellow heirs with Christ, and say, “Okay, I’m going to move on to the next guy.”  He didn’t give Robert Lewis the vision, desire and ability to impact our lives so dramatically and not expect the wisdom and knowledge we’ve been given to bear fruit.  He has higher expectations of us now.  He expects us to band together as brothers, to share one another’s burden’s, to be there for one another in our triumphs and tribulations.  No longer can we sit idly by in our marriages, our children’s lives and the life of our church.  As Robert has made clear in his definition of Authentic
Manhood, we are called and have been equipped to:
Reject Passivity
Accept Responsibility
Lead Courageously
With the tools we’ve been given through Men’s Fraternity we aspire to become the kind of men God has used throughout history to make a difference for His kingdom.  We will stumble, we will fail, we will be frail, but with God’s help and the encouragement we will give one another, we will make a difference.  And finally we will believe the promises of God and:
Expect a Greater Reward, God’s Reward

APRIL 2011

Will Cambridge Be An Effective Congregation in the Future?
Dear Church Family,
At the Pastor-Deacon Church Leadership Retreat March 21st, I attended a session called, “Church Change – Empowering the Next Generation” by Travis Collins, the pastor of Bon Air Baptist Church.  His presentation was based on a series of talks he had given to his church during their Summer Conference 2009.  Since then Bon Air has taken steps to address many of the areas he identified as concerns.  I want to share with you some of what was discussed in the presentation because it pertains to not just our church but to most of the churches in our area.  Travis used the term “effective church” and so will I.
For a church to be effective in the future:
1.) It must incorporate young adults into the leadership of the church.  (Note: For the purposes of discussion and planning, Bon Air has defined Young Adult as anyone from the age of 19-39.  That groups together college, professional, single, single-again, and married.)  This is more than just inviting young adults to serve on committees since most young adults aren’t interested in serving on them. They do, however, want to be involved in leading ministries.  What this means is that the church will have to take a hard look at how to empower people to lead and how decisions are made in the church.
2.) It must plan on multiple generations working and worshipping together. Young adults do not want to be isolated in their own group. Travis told us to give up on plans to have a separate contemporary service because young adults want to be part of “intergenerational communities where they mix and form relationships with all ages.” (cited in Robert Webber, The Younger Evangelicals).
3.) It must move towards a varied worship experience.  Young adults prefer a mixture of hymns sung to a modern, upbeat tempo which some are labeling, “ancient future.”  These are hymns redone in a simple guitar-driven format. (cited in Ed Stetzer, Lost and Found).  Much of what may be a future worship service is still being developed, and may have several components such as “songs, Scripture reading, open sharing, a time of silence,  more songs, a message, visuals, and times of quiet and meditation.” (cited in Dan Kimball, Emerging Worship).  Such services may actually attract people of all ages.
4.) It must emphasize the benefit of small groups and the closeness of community in a small church.  The church must also accept the idea that many un-churched young adults will not come into a church building but may be willing to meet regularly in a coffee house or house church.
These are just a few of many important points to study.  Expect to hear more about this topic as we move forward.  Much of the presentation came from How to Reach People Under 40 Without Losing People Over 60 by Eddie Hammett.  I am looking into getting copies of this book at a discount through Ken Kessler for study by the Vision2020 Team.
Pastor Jay

MESSIAH IN THE PASSOVER DEMONSTRATION
On Sunday, April 10th, Rev. Israel Cohen will be our guest for the morning worship service when he will preach on Israel and Prophecy.  Then in the evening at 7:00 p.m. he will conduct a sermonic demonstration called, Messiah in the Passover, showing how Jesus fulfilled the ancient feats of Passover.
Rev. Cohen is a representative of Chosen People Ministries, one of the world’s most extensive ministries to God’s chosen people – the Jews.  He was raised in a conservative Jewish home before giving his life to the Jesus as an adult.
A traditional Passover Seder table is set complete with all the articles of Passover.  The speaker will explain the symbolic meanings of the various items of the Passover feast and give special emphasis on how they relate to the New Testament and to our celebration of the Lord’s Supper.  Messiah in the Passover gives the Christian community insight into Jewish traditions so that the Jewish roots of Christianity can be better understood.  This program also helps the Jewish and Christian communities understand their common heritage.

WOMEN’S MINISTRY
The ladies will be finishing up their evening bible study in early May. It has been an amazing journey so far learning God’s different names and how each reveals to us his love and presence in our lives. Some names we have studied so far are: Elohim= God as Creator, El Elyon= God as sovereign over the universe, El Roi= God who sees, El Shaddai= the all-sufficient One, Adonai= Lord and Master, Jehovah= self-existent One, Jehovah-jireh= the Lord will provide, Jehovah-rapha= the Lord who heals, and more! God is awesome and loves us so much. After the study is complete, the ladies will focus on a special service project that will be announced in the May newsletter.

COOKING CLASS
The Women’s ministry is sponsoring a cooking class on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 6:00 p.m.  Each person attending the class will make a pie to take home to their family and one to give to various families in the Church fellowship for all their wonderful church work in helping to make the Cambridge Women’s ministry such a success.  The class is limited to 12; therefore, please contact Libby Benton early to register.
